About Eating Disorders, Body Images Issues, and More

We live in a world that appears obsessed with how we appear, what we consume, and more. Despite very little evidence that these matter, society itself pushes the idea that we need to monitor our diet, look a certain way, and otherwise see food as the enemy.

As a result, it’s not uncommon for people – especially adolescents and young adults, but even those of all ages – to develop issues with their body. These include:

  • Anorexia – Severe caloric restriction in an effort to lose weight.
  • Bulimia – Binging/purging cycle that affects a person’s life.
  • Binge Eating Disorder – Overwhelming urge to eat excessive portions of food, often as a coping tool.

These are only a few examples, but these issues all affect a person’s health and happiness in negative ways. Over time, they can also become unhealthy and dangerous behaviors that affect your nutritional intake.

FAQ

Q: What is a Person’s “Relationship with Food?”

A: Food is designed to be tasty and nourish our bodies. It is not designed to be a coping tool, nor should we look at it as the enemy of our goals.

Within our work as therapists, we’re looking at not only the person’s body image and how they feel about themselves, but also their relationship with food and whether or not it’s affecting their decisions.

Q: What is “Disordered Eating” and How Does it Compare to “Eating Disorders?”

A: There many eating disorders well defined by the DSM-V – the diagnostical manual that specialists use to diagnose mental health challenges. These include disorders like anorexia and bulimia. But many others experienced issues related to food that are problematic, but do not yet have a diagnosis. For example, “orthorexia” is an emerging challenge where a person is so obsessed with so called “healthy eating” that it affects their behaviors.

Conditions like orthorexia, and related issues such as an aversion to foods that are otherwise good for them, an obsession with diets or “clean eating,” and more, are all still problematic. They’re signs of “disordered eating” behaviors. So we refer to them by that label.

Q: Do You Work With Teens?

A: Yes. Many of our therapists work with teens/adolescents. We encourage you to reach out to us today to discuss availability.
